Welcome back to something I started, way back in 2010. This is my first Wednesday Word post in a very long time.
For a brief time, Wednesday Word became a weekly tradition for me. Then it became a tradition for me to look at what I wanted to write that week and role my eyes at it.
Tradition is a word that comes from a mix of comfort and control.
I say this after listening to a recent CBC podcast episode of Front Burner in which they discuss the arrest of Andrew Tate…a self described mysogynist who stated that women should be in their traditional place, at home where they are then property of the man that controls them.
Interesting theory.
Throwing the word tradition in front of it, however, and some have taken the idea of subjugating half the world population much more seriously than they should in this modern society.
Modern may not be the exact opposite of tradition, but they are words generally on opposing sides of each other.
Guys like Tate frighten me.
Guys who have had such a perceived hard time and won’t accept the responsibility for their own choices. They find someone or some situation to blame rather than turning it inward to actually work on themselves.
It’s even worse when they are charismatic and find their megaphone, as Tate obviously did.
As George Carlin once said:
“The planet is fine. The people are fucked.”
People like Tate are trying to prove that statement to be correct. His recent Twitter interaction with Greta Thunberg should be all the proof you need on this, your honour.
I rest my case. *mic drop*
Well, at least on that part.
For entertainment purposes alone, it is worth seeing Tate’s “angered” response to Thunberg. There is nothing like a man barreling towards middle age that gets a young woman in his focus…only to be run over by her.
Back to Carlin, though.
The planet will be fine even though tradition suggests we will use up all the resources until it is too late to save ourselves and likely taking most of the current life on the planet with us.
But, tradition says so.
So let’s blow these doors off!
Hopefully someone saves us a seat on the last plane out.
